When I had my first of experience of “hugging for a long time”, I was blown away. I had the idea to try it from a vision that came to me while I was doing my morning meditation. I wasn’t prepared for what happened when I tried doing it for the first time.
I expected my experiment with a friend to last 15 minutes or so…because that would be a long time to hug right? But once we began to hold one another, a kind of comfort and gentle pleasure took us over and I felt myself open profoundly…I was on a magic carpet ride of good feeling. When we finally stopped, after over 2 hours, I couldn’t believe I didn’t know that this was possible before then, and I couldn’t believe everyone in the world didn’t know about it. That is how this whole adventure began.
So through the years since, I’ve come to understand it all better. Studies show clearly that when we are held in a context that feels safe, our bodies generate hormones that are associated with emotional bonding, well being and happiness. Our immune systems are stronger and we live longer when we are touched adequately. Being held is good medicine for the body and soul. It wasn’t just some magical experience that happened to me…others experience it too!
I know that some people find all this strange, particularly the idea of holding someone you don’t know well and aren’t romantically connected to. It also challenges our cultural suspicion around vulnerability. So, as much as I’d like it to be otherwise, this practice isn’t for everyone.
But if you know that you like cuddling and don’t get enough of it in your life, or if you don’t have as much intimate contact with others and feel isolated, my men’s hugging workshop may be just for you.
